About Greek Heritage Society of Southern California
The Greek Heritage Society of Southern California (GHS), based in Sherman Oaks, CA, is a non-profit organization dedicated to documenting, preserving, and celebrating Greek American culture and history. Since its establishment in 1985, GHS has developed comprehensive archival services and educational resources that showcase the artistic, academic, professional, and athletic achievements of the Greek community throughout Southern California.
GHS operates through its flagship FLOGA Project—FLOGA meaning "FLAME" in Greek, symbolizing the passing of the torch from generation to generation—which has conducted extensive interviews with over 300 Greek immigrants and Greek Americans. The organization maintains a detailed database of historical photographs, private footage, and folk art treasures, all carefully catalogued for current and future research and educational initiatives.
The organization provides multiple services to the Sherman Oaks community and beyond, including the development and distribution of award-winning documentary films that chronicle the Greek American experience across different eras: "The Pioneers: 1900-1942," "The Promise of Tomorrow: 1940-1960," and "The New Greek Americans: 1960-2018." GHS also offers workshops and training programs focused on Greek cultural heritage and accomplishments, while collaborating with educational institutions like the Basil P. Caloyeras Modern Greek Studies Center at Loyola Marymount University. As a non-political, non-profit California corporation, GHS works with cultural and educational organizations throughout the region to promote cross-cultural understanding and preserve Greek heritage for present and future generations.
